The team of the international OPTIMA project together with the National Antarctic Scientific Center of Ukraine invite schoolchildren to a live broadcast from the Akademik Vernadsky station in the Antarctic. You will have a unique opportunity to communicate with Ukrainian polar scientists who are currently conducting exciting experiments in the extreme conditions of the icy continent. The live broadcast will start at 13:45 Kyiv time on 4 December (Wednesday). You can watch the broadcast on the Facebook page of the event and ask questions in the comments.
On 04 December (Kyiv time), thematic meetings will be held in secondary schools in Vinnytsia, Volyn, Lviv and Sumy regions. Representatives of higher education institutions will talk to high school students about academic integrity and open science.
In addition, there will be a live broadcast with the members of the 29th Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition. Geophysicists Oleksandr Bohomaz and Anna Soina will share their impressions and talk about their scientific research, the use of open science principles, and possibly demonstrate the inhabitants of the harsh Antarctic region. At the end of the meeting, everyone will be able to ask their questions.
Why is it important?
Today, the success of Ukraine directly depends on the success of each of its citizens. At the same time, our joint progress is based on trust and the widespread introduction of technology and innovation in all areas of the economy and social life. Trust must be built both on a personal level (for colleagues, partners, teachers and mentors) and on an institutional level (for government, law enforcement agencies and educational institutions). The key to such trust is openness and integrity.
The technology economy requires highly skilled professionals, and it is the academic environment that provides a combination of integrity, openness and professional qualifications. A viable education and science system is the foundation for the development of the technology economy and Ukraine’s success. For example, the economic miracles of Germany and Japan in the post-war years were largely due to investments in education and science, as well as trust in public institutions.
What will we discuss?
Academic integrity is a kind of agreement between all participants in the academic environment based on key values: honesty, trust, fairness, respect, responsibility and courage. Adherence to these principles ensures the quality of the educational process and research.
Open science is about transparency and accessibility of knowledge that is disseminated and developed with the help of modern information and communication technologies.
This meeting is a great opportunity for young people to engage in an important dialogue about the future of science, education and society in Ukraine!
