This year’s admission campaign at Lviv Polytechnic confirmed the consistency of trends among applicants and at the same time brought several important innovations. Roman Shuliar, Executive Secretary of the Admissions Committee, shared its results and peculiarities.
According to him, the most popular majors were management, marketing, psychology, cybersecurity and information security, IT specialties, law and economics, etc.
– The top majors remain unchanged. At the same time, there has been an increase in the number of applications for engineering programmes, for example, applied physics and nanomaterials. This testifies to the effective career guidance work and the correctly constructed strategy of the university’s admission campaign.
It should be noted that this year’s admission campaign had a number of innovations. For example, applicants were given recommendations to take not only government-funded places but also contract ones. Lviv Polytechnic received 7,196 recommendations for contract and 2,985 for government-funded places. This is an absolute record for the whole country.
– There were only 147 refusals of government-funded places. Last year, there were 456. Among the reasons there were the increase in the cost of education and the applicants’ awareness that they might not receive another recommendation. The number of refusals of contract-based education was also relatively small – about 150, said Roman Shuliar.
The state provided the most support to the IT sector, construction, energy, and other engineering specialties. In contrast, there were significantly fewer budget places in areas with high competition, and therefore, greater emphasis was placed on contract form of study.
– The new educational programmes showed different results: some had to be closed due to low enrolment, while others, on the contrary, surprised with their high popularity. For example, the educational programme «International Business Administration» attracted so many applicants that we opened four academic groups at once.
Lviv Polytechnic became the first in Ukraine by the number of applications accepted for the competition:
– We surpassed other universities in Ukraine by 500 applications. We also rank first in Ukraine by the number of recommendations for government-funded places. There are no official statistics on the number of recommended applicants for the contract form of study yet, but according to our information, Lviv Polytechnic is also in the lead position here, added Roman Shuliar.
Our university pays special attention to the children of combatants. Already in the first days after the completion of the undergraduate admission campaign, the university transferred 147 applicants to vacant places, and for the first time, none of them were returned to the state. But we still need more than 500 such places. As the executive secretary of the Admissions Committee emphasised, the university is working to fully compensate the cost of study for the children of soldiers. This is planned to be done through programmes of the Ministry of Veterans Affairs.
Despite the significant results, the admission campaign is not over yet. Enrolment for master’s programmes continues until 25 August, and additional admission for bachelor’s programmes will take place from 15 to 25 September. However, applicants in the additional enrolment can attend classes according to the schedule from 1 September. In September, Lviv Polytechnic expects about 200 more applicants who will be able to study on a contract basis and apply for grants and state compensation.
