On November 5, 2024, four memorial plaques dedicated to outstanding scientists of the Institute of Chemistry and Chemical Technologies were unveiled in the eighth academic building of Lviv Polytechnic National University. The event brought together family members of the scientists, their colleagues, university professors, representatives of the clergy and the city community to pay tribute to the people whose work left a significant mark on science.
At the unveiling of the memorial plaques, Lviv Polytechnic Rector Yurii Bobalo expressed his deep gratitude to those who keep the memory of the scientists alive:
– They created the history of science, the Institute, the Faculties and, of course, Lviv Polytechnic. It would be great if the university, with the help of its Institutes, published a book about each of them, which would become a tradition for future generations. These people deserve to have their names remembered not only for decades, but for centuries.
Oleksandr Ivashchuk, Deputy Director of the Institute of Chemistry and Chemical Technologies, said:
– We were honoured to work and learn from these scientists, to communicate with them. Their knowledge and experience now remain in our memories and hearts, and as long as we remember, they live among us.
Outstanding scientists of Lviv Polytechnic
Professor Zorian Pikh, Doctor of Chemical Sciences, was Honoured Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, the Head of the Department of Organic Products Technology at the Institute of Chemistry and Chemical Technologies and Vice-Rector for Scientific Research (2007–2014). He made a lot of efforts to establish cooperation between Lviv Polytechnic National University and the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, create an innovative system of Lviv and Lviv Polytechnic, organise international scientific cooperation, introduce new approaches to the organisation and execution of scientific work and applied developments of the university, develop and implement the concept of integration of science and education, and provide information support for scientific research.
Professor Volodymyr Novikov, Doctor of Chemical Sciences, was Head of the Department of Biologically Active Compounds Technology. His scientific output includes 380 publications, including 8 monographs, over 120 articles in scientific journals and 24 patents. His research left a significant mark in chemical science and biotechnology.
Oleh Suberliak, Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Honoured Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, Head of the Department of Chemical Technology of Plastics Processing, ICCT, published more than 600 scientific papers, received 70 copyright certificates and patents. He prepared and published 14 textbooks and manuals, 6 monographs, including those in three languages of the European Union, and participated in numerous international scientific and technical conferences and symposia.
Stanislav Voronov, Head of the Department of Organic Chemistry and former Vice-Rector for Scientific Research, is known for his fundamental research in the field of polymers in Ukraine and worldwide. Over the years, the prominent scientist created a significant work: he wrote more than 700 papers, received more than 100 Ukrainian patents and copyright certificates for developments, and co-authored four monographs. Under his leadership, the scientific school «Development of theoretical foundations for the synthesis and chemical modification of polymers and composite materials based on organic peroxides» developed.
Those present at the ceremony emphasised that these outstanding personalities were not only brilliant scientists, but also inspired their colleagues and students. The four bright and special persons would always remain in our memory. Through their work, they enriched science and built a bridge between generations of researchers and educators. Let us remember and honour them!
