On 18 December, as part of long-term cooperation, representatives of the State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety (SNTC NRS) visited Lviv Polytechnic National University.

The main purpose of the visit was to discuss and review educational programs in the specialty «Nuclear Power Engineering». Andrii Maliar, Director of the Institute of Power Engineering and Control Systems, Deputy Director Marta Kuznetsova, and Tetiana Rymar, the guarantor of the first (bachelor’s) level educational program «Nuclear Power Engineering» from Lviv Polytechnic attended the meeting.

During the discussion, Ihor Shevchenko, Director of the SNTC NRS, emphasized that the effective implementation of innovative solutions in the field of nuclear power engineering is impossible without training highly qualified specialists. According to him, modern specialists should not only have solid technical knowledge, but also understand the issues of regulation, communication and risk management. The formation of such competencies, he emphasized, should begin at the stage of studying at higher education institutions.

Following the meeting, the parties agreed to launch a joint project aimed at providing consulting support by SNTC NRS specialists in the process of creating a modern training course «Modern Nuclear Technologies and the Safety of Their Application». The course will be aimed at teachers and students majoring in Nuclear Energy and will contribute to the formation of a comprehensive understanding of the current state of nuclear energy, trends in its development and approaches to ensuring safety in the industry.

In addition, representatives of the Center met with Iryna Yaremchuk, Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation at Lviv Polytechnic, and Roman Nebesnyi, Head of the Research Department. As a result of the meeting, agreements were reached to organize a joint Summer Nuclear School at Lviv Polytechnic, involving specialists from SNTC NRS and open to students in nuclear-related fields from higher education institutions across Ukraine. The participants also discussed prospects for scientific cooperation and the potential implementation of joint international projects in the field of nuclear energy.

In addition, Ihor Shevchenko, as a representative of one of the key employers in the industry, expressed his willingness to join joint student scientific papers competitions.

The fruitful meeting ended with an informative tour of the Assembly Hall, the Julian Zachariewicz Hall and the History Museum of Lviv Polytechnic, as well as with a visit to the large-scale audiovisual installation «Breathing of Machines», dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the University’s Engine Room.
