Roman Kuzmyn, a senior lecturer at the Department of History, Museum Studies and Cultural Heritage, and Rostyslav Melnyk, a senior lecturer at the same Department, have been working for a long time on a recently published study «The Research Sector of Lviv Polytechnic Institute in 1944–1978».

According to Roman Kuzmyn, co-author of the monograph, this work is a kind of result of the study of the history of the Research Sector of our University till 1979 – the time when it was reformed into the Research and Development Department.

In the prologue, historians wrote about the researches of Lviv Polytechnic professors from the beginning until 1944 – when the institution began to resume its postwar activities in the status of Lviv Polytechnic Institute (Lviv Polytechnic received this name with the arrival of Soviet power in Western Ukraine in 1939). Thus the reform of the Institute within the Soviet system of education and science began.

– We researched aspects of integrating higher education into the Soviet educational system, state budget and contractual issues that operated at the Institute from the second half of the 40s to almost the end of the 70s. We analyzed student researches and their important topics, which were the pride of Polytechnic. These achievements were converted into awards which were received by researchers at various Soviet and international scientific exhibitions, which was at that time a real achievement of the Institute, says Roman Kuzmyn.

The monograph is based on the documents of the State Archives of Lviv Region and the Archives of Lviv Polytechnic and is widely illustrated mostly with black and white photographs, which prevailed in that period.

The authors plan to continue their research on the development of Polytechnic science and publish the second part of the monograph, which will cover the Research Sector in 1979–1991.
