On November 20-24, the "Circular Monday" event took place for the first time at the Marketing and Logistics Department at “Lviv Polytechnic” National University and at "Kid" elementary school with a preschool department together with the entire European community. Ukraine appeared for the first time on the activities map for the day "Circular Monday".
On Monday, November 20, a promotional event was held – economics and management Institute students, who were in white clothes, received a Qr code for an online flea market and heard about the "Circular Monday" main goal - minimizing linear consumption and switching to circular consumption. Everyone could offer to rent or exchange an item. Students were mostly interested in books.
On November 20, a number of activities also took place in the "Kid" elementary school with a preschool department. For 4th grade "Dyvosvit" pupils, teachers Nataliia Budzinska and Lesia Paplyk conducted an introductory lesson on the topic: "Circular" Monday as opposed to "Black" Friday. In particular, they determined the reasons for buying unnecessary things, the negative impact of excessive consumption on the environment, the need to introduce changes and attract the society attention. An offline "flea market" was also organized, in which the school principal, Oksana Rosypska, teachers and pupils took an active part. The "flea market" participants gladly gave a "second" life to their things, which they exchanged and borrowed for use.
On November 21 and 22, marketing and logistics department teachers, Oksana Dovhun, Taisiia Nakonechna, and Nataliia Mashchak, discussed with students the overproduction problems, the natural resources depletion, and advice on conscious consumption, and also learned about the negative impact on the environment of mass sales on Black Friday around the world. . The students were introduced to the introduction history of "Circular Monday" (1997) by the Swedish company Repamera, in the framework of which every year workshops and speeches are held in various organizations with a call to consume according to the 3R principle "Reuse, rent, repair". This also means rational purchases consideration, sorting and recycling of what we throw away.
As part of the "Circular Monday" activities week, students, pupils, teachers and professors for several days wore white t-shirts and hoodies as a support sign for the event ideas, and also took group photos to be posted on social networks with the hashtag #circularmonday in order to popularize this event and attract society attention.
The participants were pupils, students, teachers and professors - it is important that these are different generations. Everyone heard new facts that will influence consumer behavior and promote a circular approach. We consider when and why you should say "no" to Black Friday!
