The team of the Viacheslav Chornovil Institute of Sustainable Development, Lviv Polytechnic National University, led by Myroslav Maliovanyi, Head of the Department of Ecology and Sustainable Environmental Management, took part in the Vacuum Deep Tech Acceleration hackathon and won access to the Science Intensive Innovation, Development and Renovation acceleration programs. During the competition, researchers presented the project «Restoration of disturbed lands» and together with mentors worked out ideas for their commercialization.

The Vacuum Deep Tech Acceleration hackathon lasted three days, from March 1 to 3. More than 100 participants took part in it offline and online, and 53 ideas were submitted to the jury.

At the hackathon Lviv Polytechnicians presented the results obtained during the implementation of the project «Development of a complex technology for obtaining and using substrates based on organic waste and natural sorbents for the needs of biological reclamation and remediation of man-made disturbed lands».

The team of the Viacheslav Chornovil Institute of Sustainable Development plans to continue working with the Lviv Municipal Enterprise «Green City», to produce some industrial batches of the substrate and to use it for the reclamation of the Hrybovychi landfill.

«This will be a pilot, demonstration project», explained Myroslav Maliovanyi. – We will show the results to other utility companies of Ukraine. We are convinced that this is a good way to restore man-made disturbed lands, as, unfortunately, there are lots of them. We hope to see green lawns and parks in place of disturbed lands in the near future».

Acceleration is implemented with the support of the USAID Program «Competitive Economy of Ukraine», the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine and the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine together with Kyiv Academic University, Ukrainian Startup Fund, and YEP Acceleration program.
