The department of Ukrainian language was established on 25th of December, 1989. It was headed by G.L.Voznyuk, associate professor and PhD in Philological sciences. It was created as a professional training and methodology center on The Ukrainian language to promote humanities knowledge, improvement of language training of students and the university staff and rise of language culture.
Nowadays, the Department of Ukrainian language includes competent team of highly qualified specialists of philology, which serves all departments of the university. There are 12 PhDs, 8 of which (G.V. Nakonechna, I.D. Farion, Z.J. Kunch, O.R. Mykytyuk, O.G. Lytvyn, S.Z. Bulyk-Verkhola, I.P. Vasylyshyn, U.V. Tehlivets) wrote their dissertations while working at the department.
Every year the department staff publishes more than 30 scientific articles and makes speeches at numerous scientific conferences. A number of scientific monographs and more than 50 training and methodology publications were published,as well as manuals on Ukrainian(for professional purposes), modern Ukrainian and the basics of rhetoric and terminology are ready for publishing. The department also works as a consulting center on terminology, culture of the Ukrainian language and stylistic principles of verbal communication for staff and students of Lviv Polytechnic National University.
Department consistently implements its conceptual idea, namely to cooperate with experts of specialized departments in creation of scientific and technical terminology dictionaries. About 30 dictionaries of different disciplines, created with the participation of the department staff, have been already published. Head of the department and associate professor G.L. Voznyuk and professor L.M. Polyuha were awarded with Ukrainian Prize of Ivan Ohienko in science and education for active and productive lexicographic activity. Department staff actively participates in activities of the Taras Shevchenko «Prosvita» Society, carries out significant educational work among students and promotes Ukrainian language and culture of language in the press, on radio and television.
All educational, methodical and scientific work of the department is inseparable from cultural and educational. Department teachers actively participate in activities of the Taras Shevchenko «Prosvita»Society. M.V. Gnatyuk is a member of the Information Center at World Federation Secretariat of Ukrainian Lemko-Rusyn associations. Our department and Institute of Architecture repeatedly held language and art exhibition "Language is the foundation of your life" for Ukrainian Writing and Language Day. The results of this exhibition are sets of posters on language issues, made by students. The head of this project is associate professor I.D. Farion. New authorial project of Irina Farion, «Academic workshops: from the book to goal», launched in autumn 2011, involves the invitation of famous scientists, writers and artists to present their books and works of art.
The department has significant experience in attracting students to participate in public events (literary and musical evenings devoted to individual writers; traditional readings and evenings of T. Shevchenko, conversations at practical classes on cultural life in Ukraine, including Lviv; excursions to museums; visits to art galleries and theaters along with students; etc.).
