On November 25–28, the Marketing and Logistics Department of  “Lviv Polytechnic” National University and the International Relations Lyceum named after V. Stus hosted the event “Circular Monday” for the second year in a row together with the entire European community.

During November 25-28, lecturers of the Marketing and Logistics Department Oksana Dovhun, Taisiia Nakonechna and Nataliia Mashchak discussed in lectures with INEM undergraduate students:

  • overproduction problems and natural resources depletion;
  • negative impact on the environment of mass sales on “Black Friday”;
  • the need for more thoughtful and conscious consumption, providing practical advice.

The students were introduced to the history of “Circular Monday” (1997), founded by the Swedish company Repamera, as a counterpoint to “Black Friday.” The main call is to try to adhere to the 3R principle (reuse, repair, rent), which is popularized every year at workshops, performances, and flash mobs organized as part of the event.

Also on November 25, lecturer Nataliia Mashchak joined the Circular Monday Global Session, organized by the event’s co-founder Alexandra Davidson. Alexandra shared her experience from previous popularization campaigns and shared inspiring examples of practices implemented around the world. To date, 42 countries around the world and over 1,400 businesses, organizations, and influencers have joined the event, which are actively implementing and promoting the principles of Circular Monday in their activities. To better understand the harm and impact of excessive consumption, the organizers recommended watching the film “Buy now!”, in which former employees of global brands tell what tricks brands go to get customers to buy again and again. At the end of the session, there was a call to post a post or story on social networks with the hashtag #circularmonday to globally spread knowledge about the event. The event organizers collected all the comments from social media and edited a video that reached 41 million users.

A number of activities also took place of International Relations Lyceum named after V. Stus on November 26. For the Lyceum students, teacher Oksana Dovhun held an introductory lecture on the topic: "Circular" Monday as opposed to "Black" Friday. In particular, about how the environment suffers from excessive consumption and, as a result, throwing away many things, and also emphasized the need to implement changes and attract the attention of the younger generation. After the lecture, a quiz with prizes was organized, as well as an exchange of games and books between students, thus giving a "second" life to their things - this was their contribution to keeping the environment clean. The "E-marketing" project team thanks teacher Ruslana Ivanova and Lyceum director Svitlana Uralova for their assistance in holding the event.

As part of the "Circular Monday" activities week, students, pupils and teachers wore white T-shirts and hoodies for several days as a sign of support for the event ideas, and also took group photos to post on social networks with the hashtag #circularmonday in order to popularize this event on social networks and attract public attention.

Members of the "E-marketing" project team: Taisiia Nakonechna, Oksana Dovhun and Nataliia Mashchak thank you for your active participation and attention to the event, and also offer everyone who wishes to calculate their carbon footprint using the QR code.

This event was held within the project "Dissemination of EU practices through e-marketing, conscious consumption, circular economy, resource efficiency" ("E-marketing of conscious consuming") of the Erasmus+ Jean Monnet Module program.
