A solemn ceremony was held to inaugurate the UNESCO Chair on Sustainable Water and Waste Management as part of the 6th International Scientific and Technical Conference on Water Supply and Wastewater Disposal Designing, Construction, Operation and Monitoring in the Assembly Hall of Lviv Polytechnic on 15 October.
Higher Status
UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) is a specialized agency of the United Nations that promotes peace through international cooperation in education, science, culture, and communication. UNESCO Chairs are special units established at higher education institutions in cooperation with UNESCO. They are responsible for conducting research and implementing educational and public initiatives in the fields identified by UNESCO as global priorities. Through the UNITWIN/UNESCO Chairs programmes, the organization supports and fosters international scientific collaboration, bringing together more than 10,000 researchers across 851 UNESCO Chairs in over 115 countries, including 13 in Ukraine: eight in Kyiv, four in Kharkiv, and one in Lviv.
On 26 May, UNESCO and Lviv Polytechnic signed an agreement to establish the UNESCO Chair on Sustainable Water and Waste Management on the basis of the Department of Ecology and Sustainable Environmental Management (ESEM), Viacheslav Chornovil Institute of Sustainable Development, and with the involvement of specialists from other Departments of the university. The Chair is headed by Professor Myroslav Maliovanyi, Doctor of Technical Sciences and Head of the ESEM Department.
The Water Family Warmly Welcomed the Newcomer
The solemn opening ceremony of the UNESCO Chair on Sustainable Water Resources and Waste Management began with a welcome speech delivered on behalf of the university by Professor Oleh Karyi, Vice-Rector for International Relations. In his speech, he emphasized the importance of expanding Lviv Polytechnic’s international cooperation within UNESCO programs and expressed confidence that the newly established Chair will strengthen the university’s scientific potential in the field of environmental science.
The establishment of the UNESCO Chair is a significant milestone not only for Lviv Polytechnic but also for the entire western region of Ukraine. It is the first UNESCO Chair in Western Ukraine and the thirteenth in the country, underscoring the active integration of Ukrainian science into the global educational and research community.
