The traditional International Roundtable «The Lviv-Warsaw School: Ukrainian-Polish Intersections in the Philosophical Field» was held on 11 February 2025. It was organised by the Department of Philosophy, Lviv Polytechnic National University, and the Kazimierz Twardowski Philosophical Society of Lviv. The event was dedicated to the memory of the founder of the Lviv-Warsaw School of Philosophy, Kazimierz Twardowski, as well as his students, renowned scholars Stepan Baley and Oleksandr Kulchytskyi. In 2025, we mark the 140th anniversary of the birth of psychologist and educator Stepan Baley (4 February 1885 – 13 September 1952) and the 130th anniversary of the birth of philosopher, cultural critic and ethnopsychologist Oleksandr Kulchytskyi (8 February 1895 – 30 April 1980).
Valentyna Drotenko, Associate Professor at Lviv Polytechnic National University, addressed the philosophical aspects of Stepan Baley’s works, highlighting the following features of the artist’s psychotype: synesthetic psyche, going beyond the norms and honesty with himself.
Andriy Hnativ, Associate Professor at Lviv Polytechnic National University, spoke about Baley’s research on children’s perception of objects on stands. These Baley’s studies in the field of child psychology of perception shed light on the formation of a syncretic perception of reality in children, which actually disappears in adulthood.
Andriy Kadykalo, Associate Professor at the Department of Philosophy, Lviv Polytechnic National University, shared the results of archival research on the philosophical heritage of the philosopher, educator and psychologist Klymentiy Hankevych, which was critically received by the Polish intellectual community. This refers to his Essays on Slavic Philosophy (1869; 1873), which Polish intellectuals responded to with reviews. Therefore, we can talk about Polish-Ukrainian scientific communication in Galicia in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
The participants of the International Roundtable stressed the importance of further research into interwar Polish-Ukrainian intellectual interactions and intersections, and the promotion of the scientific heritage of Stepan Baley and Oleksandr Kulchytsky.
