Vitalii Kinakh, a fourth-year student at the Department of Applied Mathematics of Lviv Polytechnic National University, returned from Canada where he took part in the Mitacs Globalink Research Internship Program. The right to participate in it he won at a serious international competition.

For three summer months, a representative of Lviv Polytechnic had been working in Université Laval in Quebec City (Canada’s oldest university) in a team under the leadership of Professor Michael Morin and Professor Irene Abi-Zeid. They were working on Clustering and Possibility Areas for Maritime Search and Rescue Operations Optimization project commissioned by the Canadian Coast Guard.

Vitalii’s task in this team was to develop mathematical approaches, algorithms and software for accelerated, in comparison with the available means, search for solutions, which would ultimately improve the efficiency of rescue operations. Performed computational experiments using data from real rescue operations confirmed the effectiveness of the developed tools.
