On 27–28 June 2024, representatives of the Department of Social Communication and Information Activities (SCIA Department), the Institute of the Humanities and Social Sciences, Lviv Polytechnic, took part in the 4th International Scientific and Practical Conference Praktyki lekturowe w dobie nowych mediów i technologii from the cycle Ksi@żka w mediach – Media w ksi@żce.
The conference was organized by the partners of the SCIA Department – the Department of Informatology, Bibliology and Media Education at the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin (UMCS). This is the third conference in this cycle in which Lviv Polytechnics are co-organizers.
Professor Iwona Hoffman, Director of the Institute of Communication and Media Studies, Professor Anita Has-Tokarz, PhD, Head of the Department of Informatology, Bibliology and Media Education, UMCS, and co-organizers welcomed the participants of the scientific meeting. In particular, Oleksandr Markovets, Candidate if Technical Sciences, Associate Professor, Head of the SCIA Department, noted that the conference topic, dedicated to reading practices in the context of new media and technologies, is extremely relevant in the modern information space. He emphasized that research in this area will help to better understand changes in the behaviour of information consumers and adapt teaching methods to new realities. He also expressed hope that the results of the conference would contribute to the development of new approaches to media education and the integration of innovative technologies into the educational process.
At the plenary session of the conference, Nataliia Vovk, Associate Professor at the SCIA Department, together with Oleksandr Markovets, Head of the Department, presented a study on Libraries in Wartime: Developing a Strategy for Preserving Cultural Heritage. The authors showed the current state of Ukrainian libraries in the context of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and proposed their own model of a strategy for preserving library collections, emphasizing the importance of preserving cultural heritage as an integral part of national identity. The report caused a lively discussion among the conference participants, who appreciated the potential contribution of the presented model to the preservation of cultural property during conflicts.
At the sections, Tetiana Bilushchak, Associate Professor at the SCIA Department, presented the research Rozszerzona rzeczywistość w ukraińskich książkach: transformacja tradycyjnego czytania (Augmented Reality in Ukrainian Books: Transforming Traditional Reading). During her presentation, the researcher demonstrated the results of an analysis of five Ukrainian online bookstores to assess the availability of augmented reality books. Based on this analysis, the main directions of the transformation of traditional reading under the influence of augmented reality and the classification of the use of augmented reality technologies in books were considered. Tetiana Bilushchak paid special attention to the advantages and disadvantages of using augmented reality technologies in books for different age groups.
