On February 19, 2021, the International Institute of Education, Culture and Diaspora Relations, Lviv Polytechnic National University, presented the video project «Lesia – Ukrainian. And We – Ukrainians» on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Lesia Ukrainka’s birth. The project partners were the Department of International Technical Assistance and International Cooperation, Lviv Regional State Administration, and the World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations (WFUWO).
Opening the presentation, Oleh Matviykiv, First Vice-Rector of Lviv Polytechnic, emphasized: «IECDR once again implements a large-scale project with the participation of those on whom we rest our greatest hopes for the future – Ukrainian children from all over the world. In the project «Lesia – Ukrainian. And We – Ukrainians», the presentation of which is taking place today, it was recorded fragments of Lesia Ukrainka’s poetry read by children, who joined the creation a common gift for the poet and all those who feel themselves Ukrainian».
A well-known diplomat Andrii Melnyk, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to the Federal Republic of Germany, took part in this event.
«Lviv is my hometown, said the Ambassador, and that is why I am especially pleased that the organizer of today’s event is Lviv Polytechnic». At the same time, Andrii Melnyk stressed: «I am extremely happy that Lesia Ukrainka is gradually becoming one of the main unifying factors for our Motherland and for all Ukrainians abroad».
During his speech, Andrii Melnyk shared his own experience of rethinking and rediscovering the greatness of Lesia Ukrainka, as in the Soviet educational system the poetess was rather associated with a certain «distant and inaccessible monument carved in granite just like some ancient Greek thinkers or philosophers»: «Paradoxically, a certain revolution of consciousness took place right here in Berlin, in diplomatic mission. I began to understand and feel Lesia Ukrainka in a completely different way». With the help of his wife, who, as a researcher, very thoroughly studied the Berlin period of the poetess’ life and work, Andrii Melnyk saw Lesia Ukrainka as a European poetess, opening her incredible inner world. Summing up, the diplomat emphasized: «Lesia Ukrainka was and remains one of the most secretive persons in the national literary Olympus. She invites us every day to reveal the secrets of her unsurpassed talent. I invite us to go on this exciting journey to meet Lesia Ukrainka».
