The presentation, dedicated to the defenders of Ukraine and the Day of Ukrainian Statehood, will take place on Thursday, July 28, 2022, in the Gunpowder Tower. Beginning at 17:00.

At the event, you will learn more about the defensive towers built by Danylo Romanovych and the secrets of the royal cathedral in Kholm (now Chełm). Two short reports will be given by:

  • Vasyl Petryk, scientist, conservator, head of the Department of Protection of Cultural Heritage, the Department of Architecture and Urban Development of Lviv Oblast, – «King Danylo’s Towers»;
  • Yurii Lukomskyi, architect, archaeologist, doctoral student at the Department of Restoration of Architectural and Artistic Heritage, Lviv Polytechnic National University, – «Secrets of the Cathedral of King Danylo in Kholm».

«In the 13th century, the Kyivan Rus kingdom was a very strong shield that protected Europe from the Mongol horde. In those days, King Danylo Romanovych created powerful fortifications in Kholm and built defense towers that protected the city from invaders. In the future, such defensive structures, made of stone and brick, were erected by his descendants – the Romanovyches – throughout our kingdom. These «Volyn towers» can be seen in Poland and Belarus. In Ukraine there have been preserved only their foundations, found by archaeologists. Until now, for Ukrainians, they are a symbol of the bravery and indomitability of our nation in the fight against enemies», says Vasyl Petryk.

After the presentations, the audience can watch one of the episodes of the documentary-historical series «Secrets of Great Ukrainians», dedicated to King Danylo. For the first time, this film appeared on the screens in March of last year. It was filmed by the TV channel «1+1» with the support of the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation. The author of the film is Akim Halimov.

And already on Friday, July 29, Mykola Bevz, scientist and architect, professor, head of the Department of Restoration of Architectural and Artistic Heritage, the Institute of Architecture, Lviv Polytechnic, together with a team of other well-known researchers in the field of architecture, history and archeology, will present to the public an exclusive exhibition «Scientific architectural and archaeological research of the residence of King Danylo Romanovych in Kholm». This event will also take place in the Gunpowder Tower, beginning at 16:00. The exhibition will last until August 21.
