In the new academic year, Lviv Polytechnic launches the bachelor’s professional education program «Computer Science (Computational Intelligence of Smart Systems)».

Vasyl Tesliuk, head of the Department of Automated Control Systems, the Institute of Computer Science and Information Technologies, who is the guarantor of this program, told about its peculiarities and why entrants who are thinking about the IT industry should choose the Computational Intelligence of Smart Systems.

Vasyl Tesliuk, Doctor of Technical Sciences, has been working with smart systems for over 10 years. For some time, his Department has been discussing the possibility of opening a bachelor’s degree program in Computational Intelligence of Smart Systems.

«The IT industry is developing very quickly. For the past 10–12 years, we have been extensively using various smart systems developed by computer companies. Therefore, there is a need for specialist developers. Computer companies such as ELEKS, Brock Solutions, Leobit approached us and we jointly discussed all the nuances and peculiarities of the educational process as well as training of specialists in smart systems. We developed this professional education program according to these recommendations,» says Vasyl Tesliuk.

The Computational Intelligence of Smart Systems program is based on the professional education program «Computer Science».

«For many years, we have trained specialists in the specialty «Computer Science». We preserved the basis of this program while preparing a new professional education program. In particular, a powerful block of programming: students will be taught C++, Python, Java and various disciplines related to object-oriented programming. There is also the block of fundamental training and we introduced the block of designing smart systems. A smart system is a system that makes smart decisions. There are different types of intelligence. For example, a smart house. Intelligence consists in saving energy and providing a higher level of comfort. A sensor perceives a physical value and converts it into a digital signal. There are various situations, and a failure can occur. Therefore, there is intelligence to resume work using different methods. For this, the methods of computational intelligence are best suited, as it copes better with vague tasks and unstructured data. Therefore, the peculiarity of this program is that we train specialists in the direction of development and support of smart systems, the core of which are the methods of computational intelligence,» emphasizes Vasyl Tesliuk.

Modern computer technology is developing extremely fast. Therefore, the main highlight of the program is that at the Department of Automated Control Systems, academics provide basis for understanding the operation of modern new computers, in particular quantum computers and quantum computing.

«There are many subjects in this program that are related to fundamental training, to quantum mechanics and quantum computing, to quantum optimization. This makes the program different. We also have many subjects on the development of smart systems. In addition, students study subjects related to computational intelligence. Today, many IT companies need specialists who know not only programming, but also know how to apply programming skills to the development of specific devices and systems. Therefore, our students are most sought-after specialists on the labour market,» says Iryna Kazymyra, Associate Professor at the Department of Automated Control Systems, who is one of the developers of the new professional education program.

Let us add that this program is unique for Ukraine. A similar one, in computational intelligence, exists only at Kharkiv University.

In general, the Department is equipped with the necessary equipment, there are many laboratories, and we are working on creating new ones. Students of the Department also have the opportunity to study abroad, as cooperation with many European universities has been established.
