From June 6 to 10, 2022, on the basis of various Institutes and Departments of Lviv Polytechnic National University together with the Lviv Regional Small Academy of Sciences for Youth there was held two summer schools – Polytechnic Camp and IT Camp. About 50 schoolchildren of 8-10 grades from different schools in Lviv and the region were involved in these events. The main task set by the organizers was to show children the peculiarities of the future profession, which can be acquired at our University.
In particular, in the summer school Polytechnic Camp children had the opportunity to:
- independently control the quality of products and materials by methods of analytical chemistry, work with microscopes, and work on cosmetology to create a cream from snail mucus;
- evaluate the life cycle of the coffee maker using SimaPro software;
- determine the ecological footprint of the product, simulate the ecological impact of one battery on the environment;
- learn about the methods of manufacturing machine parts;
- to compile pneumatic automation systems on the basis of Festo and Camozzi components, to get acquainted with the equipment for packaging and dosing of products.
There was also an opportunity to conduct a wide range of physical experiments (get a "dry" coin out of the water, move the electromagnetic train, etc.), get acquainted with the main parts and devices of unmanned aerial vehicles and launch them.
Instead, at the IT Camp summer school, students created and set up their own online store using CMS Wordpress and the WooCommerce plugin, conducted practical fingerprint identification classes, programmed LEGO robotics, and created programs for the Arduino microcontroller. There were also work with programmable systems on the PioneerKit 4 chip, the creation of the Internet of Things, a master class in digital circuitry, and practical modeling and printing of a 3D object.
Lviv Polytechnic National University and Lviv Regional Small Academy of Sciences for Youth are working to expand the range of summer schools so that children can get acquainted with the widest range of professions and choose the one they like before choosing their profession.
Such schools are planned in the future as well. Therefore, we invite parents and children to further cooperation!
