This year Lviv Polytechnic is on the 4th place among the higher education institutions according to the amount of submitted applications and has for 184 government-funded places more than last year. Mykhailo Honchar, Executive Secretary of the Admissions Committee of University, speaks about the peculiarities of this year’s admissions campaign.
– Does this year’s admissions campaign differ from the previous ones?
– Yes. First of all, we did not feel the demographic crisis, as it was predicted, and despite the smaller number of entrants, Polytechnic does not have less freshmen than last year. We have received over 30,000 applications...
– Which specialities and which Institutes were of the biggest demand?
– The most competitive admission is for Journalism, as there are only 10 places funded by government and more than 500 applicants (however, after all, only 8 recommended entrants applied). Also there were a lot of applications and a high passing score for all computer specialities. Let’s say, 190 for Software Engineering (take into account there are a lot of government-funded places). Among the record holders there are Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Sciences in ICSIT and ICTA, as well as new specialities: Information Systems and Technologies, Internet of Things and Cyber Security. Demand was also on International Economic Relations, International Relations, International Information, Marketing, Economics, Psychology, as well as Law. Pharmacy also remains popular. The entrants who received 200 points at EIT have chosen the most popular specialities...
– On what account has Polytechnic got more places funded by government?
– Due to the entrants with high EIT grades whose priority No. 1 was Lviv Polytechnic. In this case, we have specialities that received the maximum number of possible places funded by government: Computer Sciences, System Analysis, Cyber Security, Information Systems And Technologies, Jurisprudence, Journalism, Marketing, and some technical specialities: Hydrotechnical Construction, Fire Safety, Earth Sciences, Automation and Computer-Integrated Technologies, and Road Transport. Close to them there are Applied Mathematics, Tourism, Electronics, Biotechnology, Bioengineering and Food Technologies. Significantly increased the number of places in Management, last year out of 116 possible, they received only 53, and now – 91! In general, about one-third of specialities received the maximum level of government-funded places. This means that next year we can also increase them – in accordance with the current admission conditions, and even request an additional 10%...
– What specialities have less government-funded places?
– The least popular are Geodesy and Land Management – they received only a quarter of the maximum possible places: only 25 out of 84 possible. Construction received 169 out of 186. Applied Mechanics – 35 out of 68, Metallurgy – none of the 10 possible, Material Science – 4 out of 10. So there are specialities that are not in demand this year, and there are many of those which did not get the maximum, but did not undergo significant reduction...
– How many new students entered university this year?
– We received 2398 government-funded places from the Ministry. 300 recommended applicants did not submit the documents. 134 places we have already given to other entrants. 2162 people will pay for their study. In general, there are 4412 students who study for a bachelor’s degree.
– What is the situation with entering the master’s degree programs? Was there a demand?
– Yes, very big. In fact, all government-funded places were quickly taken... We have 1512 students for government-funded places and 1723 full-time and extramural students who will pay for their study.
