The IT market is growing, the staff shortage is escalating, the industry needs more graduates. What universities should future IT specialists choose? Vladyslav Savchenko, founder of the IT company Powercode and the European Association of Software Engineering says:

– Here are two figures: the Ukrainian IT industry needs 50 thousand specialists a year, and about 25 thousand students graduate universities in this field every year.

But in addition to quantity, the IT industry also needs a high-quality flow of graduates – with a good mathematical and technical base. Ukrainian universities prepare such students, but not all. The good news is that engineers with a solid base are trained not only in the capital.

If we talk about higher education institutions, the main suppliers of good staff for many IT companies are the three main Polytechnics:

  • National Technical University «Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute»;
  • National Technical University «Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute»;
  • Lviv Polytechnic National University.

This regional diversity shows a lot. Fortunately, IT education is not the case when the best comes to the capital.

There is one simple feature that distinguishes these universities: to enter there, you need good results of external testing. Yes, in many cases this is not an indicator, yes, there are other criteria. But entering such a university (with good scores in the external evaluation, of course), you subscribe to an interesting environment. At least.

In addition, these three Polytechnics provide a good basis. Universities work fruitfully with business, developing a dual education system – that is joint training programs with IT companies. The technical specialization of these universities is also attractive, as part of which projects are born at the junction of different technical specialties and common interests.
