Lviv Polytechnic signs a multilateral Memorandum on the reconstruction of the wooden church of the 18th century

On July 12, 2022, the Lviv Regional Military Administration signed a multilateral Memorandum of Cooperation regarding the reconstruction of the wooden church of St. Michael in the village of Pidhirtsi and the creation of the Museum of Ancient Icons on its base.

The memorandum was signed by Maksym Kozytskyi, head of the Lviv Regional Military Administration, together with Taras Vozniak, director general of Borys Voznytsky Lviv National Art Gallery, Oleh Matviikiv, the First Vice-Rector, Lviv Polytechnic National University, Mariia Dyskant, the village head of the Zabolottsi village council, Bohdan Kravts, the abbot of the parish of Archangel Michael in the village of Pidhirtsi and Ihor Kavych, head of the public organization «Pidhirtsi-Sholom».

According to the document, in addition to the church, the wooden belfry from the beginning of the 19th century and the stone gates from the beginning of the 20th century are also planned to be rebuilt. The territory around the church will be rearranged, including the cemetery of the 18th-19th centuries, and the Museum of Ancient Icons will be created on the basis of the restored church. The public organization «Pidhirtsi-Sholom» will transfer the exhibits and preserved elements of the burnt church to the newly created museum.

«Now a lot of caring and proactive people have gathered around the idea of rebuilding this church. The desire to restore it has already been expressed by Lviv Polytechnic, the Lviv National Art Gallery and the public organization «Pidhirtsi -Sholom». The Pidhirtsi village community and the local clergy are also very active. Therefore, today we all together have signed the Memorandum, which defines what obligations each of the parties undertakes to restore this unique monument. Lviv Regional Military Administration and the Department of Architecture will contribute to the reconstruction of the church at all stages, helping both organizationally and  with media, as well as with the search for funding», said Olena Vasylko, director of the Department of Architecture and Urban Development, Lviv Regional Military Administration.
