Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, the professional community of architects, public organizations, and local self-government have been actively responding to the urban and social transformations taking place in Ukraine. It is difficult to predict when and how the cities of eastern Ukraine will be rebuilt after the end of the war, but the cities that are in relative safety are adapting to today's challenges. A large number of Ukrainian forcibly IDPs in the cities of Western Ukraine need housing, jobs, expansion of social infrastructure, educational institutions, etc.
On October 17-21, 2022, the International Workshop Urban Density Lab Ukraine on the topic of Lviv Social Resilient City will be held as part of the cooperation between Lviv Polytechnic National University and TU Wien.
At the initial meeting of the tutors, which took place in the Lviv City Council building at the invitation of the chief architect Anton Kolomeitsev, the issues and challenges for the city during the war were discussed. The task envisages the development of two relevant territories proposed by the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning of the Lviv City Council - "Riasne-2" and "Zboishcha".
The purpose of the workshop is to develop solutions for the modernization of the mentioned territories through the formation of multifunctional complexes, which include: new blocks of social housing, social infrastructure, places of employment, physical and psychological rehabilitation functions, as well as the effective involvement of the mentioned territories in the city-wide functioning system.
Approaches to the formation of new qualities of social housing, functional and social diversity, ensuring accessibility and equality for all people should be the basis of project proposals.
