The staff of the Institute of Chemistry and Chemical Technologies celebrated its 150th anniversary in the famous historical building of the 9th academic building, in the room where world-famous scientists, including Nobel Laureate Maria Sklodowska-Curie, three-time rector of Lviv Polytechnic, Dr. honoris causa Julian Medvedskyi, future President of Poland Professor Mościcki and many other famous professors gave their lectures.

«Today we celebrate the second big anniversary of our Institute: the first is 100 years since the founding of the Department of Chemical Technology of Oil and Gas Processing, which marked the beginning of training the engineers, chemists-technologists according to the best European models, and the second - 150th anniversary of the establishment in 1872 separate chemical departments at the School of Technical Chemistry, which became the prototype of the current Institute of Chemistry and Chemical Technologies. We have every reason to celebrate the 150th anniversary of our Institute this year, although chemistry as one of the fundamental sciences has been taught at Lviv Polytechnic since its inception», said ICCT Director Volodymyr Skorokhoda.

On the occasion of this event, not only all employees and graduates were invited to the solemn meeting of the Academic Board of the Institute, but also distinguished guests: Rector of Lviv Polytechnic Yurii Bobalo, Vice-Rectors, former deans Yosyp Yatchyshyn and Volodymyr Humenetsky, heads of enterprises with which the Institute is closely collaborating Karpatnaftohim, Poliprom, Hirkhimprom.

«150 years is a period of time that can be divided into different years, the number of students and entrants who have been enrolled, the number of professionals who have graduated, the places where they work, the number of your employees who have studied here… These make the history the history of the University, the history of your Institute, the history of each Department, the history of each person. The Institute employed wonderful people, lots of chemists who are known not only in Lviv, but also far beyond its borders. People who became academics, directors of various educational institutions and rectors graduated from your Institute. You have a lot to be proud of, including those students who are currently studying at your Institute», said Yurii Bobalo, Rector of Lviv Polytechnic, addressing his fellow researchers.

Researchers from the Institute are known far beyond Ukraine, thus the Institute of Chemistry and Chemical Technologies was greeted by its foreign partners: University of Montpellier, Gdansk University of Technology, University of North Texas, National University of Mexico, Tbilisi State University, Faculty of Chemistry at the University of Warsaw, Lodz University of Technology and the University of Rio de Janeiro. Congratulations were also sent by Ukrainian colleagues, including the National Technical University «Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute», the National Technical University of Ukraine «Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute», the Ukrainian State University of Chemical Technology in Dnipro, and the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

The Institute of Chemistry and Chemical Technologies has always been one of the important structural units of Lviv Polytechnic. Today there are more than 250 employees, about 140 of which are academics and researchers, and in times of stability there were almost 2,000 students. Every year the Institute performs a large number of state and economic contract research work. The management of ICCT had big plans for the development of the Institute, starting the cooperation with the Confectionery Corporation ROSHEN. Scientific achievements of Polytechnic chemists are widely known outside of Ukraine. Since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, the staff of the Department of Organic Chemistry, with the support of students and their fellow chemists, has promptly launched the production of much-needed hydrogel bandages for military. And employees of the Department of Chemistry and Technology of Inorganic Substances have developed explosive devices that our defenders receive from manufacturers to use on the battlefield.
