On 29 November 2024, the National Forum on Intellectual Property and Innovation, IP LET FORUM «Intellectual Property: Law, Economy, Technology», was held in Kyiv. The event brought together representatives of the legislative and executive authorities of Ukraine, experts in the field of intellectual property, law and economics, business, creative and innovative industries, specialised associations, scientists, innovators and inventors.

The twenty advanced technological solutions of leading higher education institutions, research institutions and chambers of commerce and industry that were presented at IP LET FORUM 2024 also included scientific developments of Lviv Polytechnic.

AQUIOR – medical alginate hydrogel sterile supplies for the treatment of wounds and burns

  • These are sterile dressings that provide a modern progressive method of moist wound healing. The research team is led by Professor Volodymyr Samaryk, the Department of Organic Chemistry, the Institute of Chemistry and Chemical Technologies. One of the areas of this development received financial support from the National Research Foundation of Ukraine as part of the project «Development of hydrogel medical supplies for emergency medical services in case of penetrating abdominal trauma within the creation of a research center for new polymeric materials for medicine» which won the call «Research Infrastructures for Advanced Research».

Hydrogel layer for insulating fire resistant glass

  • The manufacturing technology of the product is based on a liquid filling composition that fills the inter-glass space of the insulating glass, which changes its properties when the temperature rises to 250°C and turns into a porous and opaque protective material that allows the glass structure to maintain its integrity without holes or cracks, as well as its thermal insulation capability. The research team is led by Professor Serhii Varvarenko, the Department of Organic Chemistry, the Institute of Chemistry and Chemical Technologies. The unique hydrogel composition for insulating fire resistant glass was developed as part of the project «Development of hydrogel composition for insulating fire resistant glass and its manufacturing technology» which received grant support from the National Research Foundation of Ukraine as the winner of the call «Science for the Recovery of Ukraine in the War and Postwar Periods».

The Forum participants showed interest in these inventions, asked many questions about the specifics of use, advantages over existing analogues, manufacturing technology, certification and the possibility of protecting the intellectual property rights of the innovators.

During the IP LET FORUM 2024 panels, a lot of problems were voiced and solutions discussed at the intersection of IP and innovation (how to make money from your ideas? which approaches work and which do not? what does Ukraine’s innovation ecosystem lack for effective commercialisation and how to fix it?), arising in the process of approximation of national legislation, the national market and Ukraine’s innovation potential to the EU.

Roman Nebesnyi, Head of the Research and Development Department, Lviv Polytechnic, and Semen Khomiak, Senior Researcher at the Centre for Collective Use of Scientific Equipment «Laboratory of Advanced Technologies for the Creation and Physical and Chemical Analysis of New Substances and Functional Materials» attended the IP LET FORUM 2024.

The event was held due to financial, informational and marketing support of the Lviv Polytechnic R&D Centre team, in particular Roman Nebesnyi and Olena Lukachuk.
