Petro Sukhorolskyi, Ukrainian futurologist, Associate Professor at the Department of International Information, the Institute of Applied Mathematics and Fundamental Sciences, Lviv Polytechnic National University, with the assistance of the Polish Society for Futures Studies, published an article Wojna na Ukrainie («War in Ukraine»). The author notes that friends from this society help to convey to the Polish audience the truth about the war and the peculiarities of the Ukrainian situation.

The Polish Society for Futures Studies is an association founded in 2011. It brings together academics, industry professionals and enthusiasts who share the belief in the importance of responsible planning.

The main theses of the article

  • The early morning of February 24, 2022 (now as important for Ukrainians as September 1, 1939, or June 22, 1941) put an end to uncertainty and ushered in a whole new reality in Ukraine. The popular vision of the fascist nature of the Russian regime and Putin as the new Hitler has been confirmed. In this reality, the axis of «good – evil» is clearly visible.
  • All this is happening at a time when the external threats to human civilization are greater than ever. In its expansion, humanity has reached clearly defined boundaries and needs to think about reformatting its activities and reaching a global consensus on key issues. Instead, we go 80 years back and deal again with bloodthirsty dictators who conquer the world in their dreams.
  • We used to be convinced that international institutions would only be strengthened and that human rights would become a truly universal standard. Now the UN is increasingly reminiscent of the pre-war League of Nations, and genocide and crimes against humanity are returning to Europe.
  • Scenarios of nuclear confrontation and a new division of the world are becoming more real, and the values of humanism and solidarity are receding into the background.
  • Theories of past decades and international rhetoric are too far from practice. And today’s crisis is a good chance to change that. However, if real decisions are replaced by a fog of empty statements and instead of looking up, everyone is used to burying their heads in the sand, positive stability should not be expected, and any images of the desired future will be unattainable for present generations.
