The Spring School «Biotechnologist, pharmacist – profession, career, success» was organized at the Department of Technology of Biologically Active Substances, Pharmacy and Biotechnology, the Institute of Chemistry and Chemical Technologies, as part of career guidance work and motivational training for future entrants of Lviv Polytechnic in the specialty 162 «Biotechnology and Bioengineering» and 226 «Pharmacy, Industrial pharmacy». It took place from May 8 to 12, 2023.
The event was held for the schoolchildren of such general educational institutions as: Olena Stepanivna Lviv Ukrainian Humanitarian Gymnasium, Lviv School No. 55, Taras Shevchenko Lviv School No. 44, Viacheslav Chornovil Lyceum No. 46 and Lyceum of Lviv City Council No. 28.
The organizing committee of the Spring School consisted of the head of the TBASPB Department, Professor Vira Lubenets (chairman of the organizing committee), Assistant Professors Olena Fedorova, Romana Petrina, Maria Kurka, Andrii Mylianych, Veronika Chervetsova, Olena Yaremkevych and assistant Olha Fedoryshyn (members of the organizing committee). The committee acquainted the participants with biotechnology and work prospects of a modern biotechnologist as well as with pharmacy and demand for the profession in the labour market of Ukraine. They also conducted tours for the future entrants and practical classes in the Department laboratories.
During the Spring School, potential entrants received basic knowledge about job opportunities and career prospects in the fields of biotechnology and pharmacy, as well as basic knowledge about modern methods of experimental work in laboratories.
Schoolchildren could work with a microscope and get to know the microcosm, see plant and microorganism preparations under the magnification, learn about «magic» in a test tube during the experiments «Interesting Chemistry» and «Toxic Chemistry», as well as about biodegradable films, molecular gastronomy and how to make creams.
During the Spring School, Tech StartUp School and its biotechnological laboratory Biotech Hub were presented to the future entrants. There they could practice producing caviar from apple juice, extracting DNA from wheat, as well as see various standard preparations of amphibians under the microscope.
