Lecturers of the Department of Ukrainian Language, Lviv Polytechnic National University, Associate Professors Zoriana Kunch, Oksana Mykytiuk, Sofiia Bulyk-Verkhola and Senior Lecturer Volodymyr Diakiv, took part in the presentation of the project «Great Personalities in Ukrainian Ethnography», which took place on 30 April in the Museum of Ethnography and Art Crafts at the Institute of Ethnology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The event is dedicated to the birthday of the prominent Ukrainian scientist, linguist, public figure, language policy researcher, publicist and blogger Iryna Farion (1964–2024).

The project is based on her writings. It resonates with the entire scientific and educational activity of Iryna Farion, who devoted her life to the struggle to establish the Ukrainian language as the basis of national existence. The authors of the idea and its implementation are Halyna Mazurok, the leading curator of the Museum of Ethnography and Crafts, the Institute of Ethnology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and Volodymyr Diakiv, Candidate of Philology, senior lecturer at the Department of Ukrainian Language, Lviv Polytechnic.

They shared their memories of Iryna Farion, her extremely dynamic life and inexhaustibly active work in various fields: teaching and lecturing at universities (in particular, at Ivan Franko National University of Lviv and Lviv Polytechnic), fundamental research in the humanities, the Great Ukrainian’s creative collaboration with the Institute of Ethnology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (in particular, with a well-known scientist, former senior researcher at the Department of Historical Ethnology, Doctor of Philology Mykhailo Khudash), social and political activities, etc.

Undoubtedly, the development of Ukrainian ethnography is inextricably linked to prominent personalities who dedicated their lives to preserving and understanding folk culture. It is thanks to their efforts that we are able to learn more about our roots, find connections between the past and the present and draw inspiration from folk wisdom.

A special place among these figures is occupied by Iryna Farion, a scholar, scientist, linguist, and cultural activist whose contribution to the preservation and affirmation of Ukrainian identity is hard to overestimate. Her work is a vivid example of commitment to national values, the struggle for the purity of the native language, and the preservation of cultural identity. The exhibition is timed to coincide with her birthday, paying tribute to those who shape national consciousness and strengthen ethnic and cultural heritage through their work.

This project, in the form of a lecture-excursion, will be held on a regular basis, every Thursday, starting from 8 May (15:00). Entrance is at the price of a museum ticket.
