Climate change, increasing anthropogenic pressure on the environment, decreasing biodiversity and other environmental threats are increasingly affecting the quality of life and safety of humanity, so the integration of environmental issues into the education system of various fields is not only relevant but also strategically important. One of the key aspects of sustainable development is environmental literacy, which involves not only knowledge of the state of the environment but also awareness of the interconnection between natural processes, social change and economic activity. The growing need to ensure the quality of environmental education and the formation of environmental awareness in the context of global challenges of our time has necessitated the development of an initial training programme as part of the professional development of university academic staff.
At the request of the Department of Training and Staff Development, the Department of Ecology and Sustainable Environmental Management, Viacheslav Chornovil Institute of Sustainable Development, held a training workshop «Environmental Aspects of Sustainable Development and Adaptation to Climate Change» from 05.05.2025 to 23.05.2025. 41 teachers from different Institutes of Lviv Polytechnic National University attended the event.
The objective of the workshop was to familiarise the participants with the basic principles of state policy in the field of climate change, including achieving carbon neutrality, the national and international regulatory framework for climate change adaptation, the anthropogenic factors that have the greatest impact on climate change, as well as increasing environmental awareness of educators in these areas.
The training workshop also had an important educational function – to form and develop an environmental culture and create conditions that foster a responsible attitude toward nature within the framework of sustainable societal development.
