At the end of the last week Lviv Polytechnic National University hosted a remarkable event – Eco-weekend. We celebrated this feast for the second time and it becomes a good tradition. From year to year ecological and environmental issues are getting more and more urgent, that is why University pays great attention to this important global problem of the present and is actively involved in finding ways to solve problems.

Olena Vovk, Assistant Professor at the Department of Artificial Intelligence Systems:

Last year, due to the initiative of students and lecturers of the Institute of Computer Science and Information Technologies, as well as the Institute of Economics and Management we started to celebrate Eco-weekend. We decided we cannot allow ecological disasters to happen, such catastrophes as it happened two years ago on the Lviv landfill and took the lives of four people. Therefore, organizing Eco-weekend, we primarily aim at disseminating and promoting relevant environmental information, in particular regarding the sorting of domestic waste, its recycling and further utilization. It is worth noting that we have already had certain practical results of such activity. Thus, all university buildings have carton containers for paper, glass and plastic waste. Similar containers are in our hostels as well.

Olena Zahoretska, Assistant Professor at the Department of Business Economics and Investment, added that Lviv Polytechnic hosts a lot of seminars and other environmental events. According to her, sorted at the beginning waste does not get into general pit – this issue is coordinated by city authorities. We sort plastic, glass and paper, as well as organic fertilizers. The Maintenance Department of University signed agreements with relevant enterprises that utilize sorted waste.

This year’s Eco-weekend was full of original and interesting activities. The organizers took care that its participants were actively engaged in various contests and competitions, and could enjoy performances of the bands from Prosvita People’s House and sports entertainments. Assistant Professor Roman Radeiko delivered an interesting lecture on Digital Hygiene in the Time of Hybrid War.

Students also gladly attended Yoga master class conducted by Svitlana Slaviohlo, and the presentation-meeting Food Genocide. Let’s Learn to Read the Label, where the audience was shown how to correctly determine the level of harmfulness of a particular product, and not blindly trust vivid advertising label.
