On September 23, students and teachers visited the Lviv park "Zalizna Voda". Oksana Sofiyanchuk, a gardener of the Halytskyi district of Lviv, told interesting and unusual facts – not only about the history, which dates back to 1830, but also about the park design by the famous gardener Arnold Roehring, the features of the park's maintenance and preservation. "Zalizna Voda" in Lviv is of particular importance as a nature reserve with unique and perennial plantings of oak, beech and other plants. Over the past few years, various initiatives have been implemented here:
- restoration of landscaping, preservation of the natural environment, a compost alley has been created, and toloki are organized;
- renovation of the "Lion's Mouth" pump room and the surrounding area, complete barrier-free access;
- since April 2021, the “Nursery” space has been equipped with flower beds and decorative plantings (coordinated by the NGO “Plato” and the NGO “Ecoterra” and with the support of the Department of Ecology and Natural Resources of the LMR, with the participation of community residents).
A therapeutic garden project is also planned here, which will focus on the rehabilitation and involvement of military personnel and those who suffered from the war, and will be part of the UNBROKEN ecosystem. In the future, further development of an environmentally friendly recreational zone is also planned. It is valuable that the students learned more about how spaces for environmental education, closer contact and harmony with nature are formed. Also, that this requires joint efforts of citizens, business and state institutions, international experience.
The project team sincerely thanks Oksana Sofiyanchuk for conducting the excursion and the assistance of Oksana Lutsko – Deputy Head of Ecology and Natural Resources Department. We wish the implementation of ideas that are valuable for people and the environment in general!
