The Deineko Geo Cup was held on the premises of the Institute of Geodesy. It is a national patriotic and scientific event, which provided for competitions between students of different higher education institutions of Ukraine in the skill of performing geodetic tasks.
The competition is named in honour of Valerii Deineko, a graduate of the Institute of Geodesy, who joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the first days of the full-scale invasion. On October 2, 2023, Lieutenant Colonel Deineko, serving with a group of soldiers from the 92nd Separate Assault Brigade, took part in an assault near Andriivka in the Donetsk region, where he personally eliminated an enemy machine-gun crew with grenades. According to Ihor Savchyn, Director of the Institute of Geodesy, the hero was killed while attempting to evacuate a fallen comrade from the battlefield, unwilling to leave him behind.
Valerii Deineko’s wife established a foundation in his name, which provides assistance to the military, organizes training for service members, and supports educational institutions in the field of geodesy.
According to Ihor Savchyn, several key components were embedded in the concept of the competition. The first is national and patriotic education: students should understand that our heroes are not «someone distant on television», but people from our own community – those who studied geodesy, attended the same classes, and learned from the same teachers as they do now. The second component is the promotion of the geodesy profession. The third is fostering a competitive spirit, as students have been lacking live interaction and activities of this kind due to the pandemic and the war. Such events allow them to assess their abilities, compare their knowledge and skills with peers from other institutions of higher education, and understand what competencies are being developed elsewhere.
