On 28 November 2024, it became known that the Signal Hawk team, which consists of undergraduate students majoring in Geodesy and Land Management at the Institute of Geodesy, Lviv Polytechnic National University, won third place in the international final of the 8th CASSINI Hackathon. This result allowed the Ukrainians not only to represent their country with dignity, but also to become one of the top three teams in Europe, sharing a place with Spanish developers.
The path to victory began with the national stage, which was held in person in Ivano-Frankivsk. Having won at the national level, the team advanced to the international final, which took place online on 27 November.
Signal Hawk consists of Nataliia Savchuk, Timofii Voitekhin, Yevhenii Poberezhnyi and Vladyslav Marchuk. Their innovative development, created as part of the hackathon «Improving Defence and Security through Geospatial Intelligence» challenge, is aimed at combating GNSS spoofing. Using machine learning and data from Copernicus satellites, the students developed software to help detect spoofing signals, block attacks and protect navigation systems. The solution has prospects for implementation in aviation, military operations and critical infrastructure.
