KINDLING is a new student competition organized by leading hotel design firms ReardonSmith Architects and MKV Design with the support of HIX, the European hotel design event. Ukrainian students could present their concepts of the hotel building, which symbolizes the revival of the country’s hospitality industry after the end of the war.
The evaluation criteria for submitted projects were:
- Vision. Does the concept deserve to be the first hotel in Ukraine after the war? Is it innovative and aesthetic?
- Community. Does design bring people together? Submitted projects should promote interpersonal connections and social experiences for both guests and local residents.
- Stability. Does the design take into account the hotel’s place in the environment and wider ecosystem? Does it demonstrate an awareness of environmentally friendly materials and the potential of technology in this context?
44 student projects from all over Ukraine were submitted to the competition in three categories:
- Architecture;
- Interior design;
- Architecture + interior design.
The student team of the Institute of Architecture and Design, Lviv Polytechnic National University – Olesya Danysh, Katrin Berkela and Maria Fedun, the Department of Architectural Constructions, – under the leadership of Associate Professor Lesia Hrytsiuk and Assistant Vasylyna Cherniaieva, the faculty of the Department of Architectural Constructions, became the winners in the category «Architecture + interior design» with the project «Vidhomin» (Echo). This is the name of the hotel located in Irpin, which Ukraine released from occupation in March 2022. The design uses a mixture of modern materials with those that are traditional for Ukraine. The project for business and leisure also symbolizes the revival of the territory that was devastated by the war.
The team member Olesia Danysh took part in the awarding ceremony of the winners in London and brought the winners’ crystal to Lviv.
