Students and academic staff of the Department of Foreign Trade and Customs, the Institute of Economics and Management, Lviv Polytechnic, joined the module «Axioms of Free Movement of Goods», which was held within the framework of the grant project «Arteries of Democracy of Ukraine: Challenges and Opportunities for Ukrainian Youth in the Context of EU Accession» supported by the U. S. Agency for International Development (USAID).
The event has become a useful platform for developing the competences and critical thinking of young people from different parts of Ukraine. The participants learnt about:
- the principles of free movement of goods within the EU market;
- challenges and prospects of customs and tariff regulation of export and import operations;
- successful cases of cooperation between domestic businesses and EU countries;
- opportunities to optimize tariff and non-tariff barriers to facilitate international trade;
etc.
The students had the opportunity not only to listen to expert presentations, but also to express their own opinions, discuss and exchange ideas on current issues of free movement of goods.
Professor Olha Melnyk, Head of the Department of Foreign Trade and Customs, Professor Oksana Yurynets, Associate Professor Oleh Mykytyn, Senior Lecturer Liubov Zalizna, together with students, actively participated in discussions, presentations and simulation games.
A special interactive feature of the module was the game «Ocean’s 8 Thoughts». The participants could test their knowledge and skills in various areas of life and broaden their horizons, as well as sing Ukrainian songs and show their creativity. Following the results of all rounds of the game, the student team of the Institute of Economics and Management «Iron Ladies» won the first place and received books from the Apriori Publishing House.
At the end of the second day of the module, an interesting creative event was held – a masterclass on Creating a Key Holder, conducted by Maria Hrom, an architect, CEO and co-founder of the Made by Dad toy shop.
The event demonstrated the high interest of students in deepening their knowledge of the free movement of goods and European law in general. The students showed a confident understanding of the basic principles of the outlined issues and the ability to apply them in practice. The participants expressed a desire to continue taking part in events with a focus on interdisciplinary approaches and active practical work, which will further develop students’ analytical and practical skills.
