The rapid development of robotic technology in Ukraine is gaining momentum. A clear example of this was this year’s exhibition «Arms and Security – 2021», where many new robots were presented not only by the national defense, but also by the private sector. Moreover, research in the field of mobile robotics is continued in universities. In particular, Roman Zinko, mechanical engineer, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor at the Department of Automotive Engineering, the Institute of Mechanical Engineering and Transport, Lviv Polytechnic National University, told in detail about promising developments from Lviv engineers, electricians, mechanics and programmers.
According to him, work on this topic began in 2014 with the beginning of Russian aggression. In fact, all the work had to be created from scratch.
11 types of mock-up, experimental and research mobile robotic platforms, complexes and their modifications weighing from 15 to 200 kg have been created. They belong to intelligence, demining, transport, security and training classes of vehicles.
According to the engineer, the basis of the project is the creation of a military combat unit, which was recommended in the Armed Forces by representatives of technical intelligence. Accordingly, a number of vehicles have already been designed and manufactured to perform specific combat missions.
Roman Zinko said that vehicles are currently controlled remotely by the remote controls. Later it is planned to introduce elements of artificial intelligence. That is, if the vehicle is moving a few hundred meters away from the operator and there is an obstacle in its path, the software should set standard procedures so that the robot could work even in case of loss of communication.
It should be noted that the project to create robotic equipment is funded by sponsors and developers themselves as well. Assistance can be not only financial, but also in the supply of components for robots, and the manufacture of separate details. In addition, the university management provides appropriate organizational, economic and material support to the project.
According to Roman Zinko, in the development and manufacture of robotic platforms there are actively involved students who perform ancillary work – drawings and the manufacture of caterpillars, maintenance of vehicles, etc.
