After almost three months of satisfaction with talents in every possible direction – dancing, singing, improvisation, design, etc., the finale of the annual student festival «Polytechnic Spring» was held on May 16. I am going to share my observations and impressions of this long-awaited in all respects gala concert.
Spring preamble
At last! Everyone connected with the festival «Polytechnic Spring» has found the best schedule for themselves – night schedule. I have to say that that it took a long time, a lot of patience and perseverance for them to make this decision. They gradually strengthened the audience’s spirit, adapting them from year to year, from performance to performance.
Finally, now in full swing, searching for interesting forms and original ways of attracting attention, libraries and museums are introducing projects – «Night at the library», «Night of museums». Students decided to keep up with this trend. So I think that next year our favorite «Spring» can be held at night, not only its finale.
However, there are lots of positive things to it. First of all, it is the usual time when students’ brains are at their peal of activity – they study harder at night and, taking into account the final concert, they also create and perform better. And people who just want to sit in the audience, criticize and make noise do not come to such performances. Only real fans come. The people from the audience are not late, and the show can go on infinitely because people are not in a hurry. Apart from this, everyone is tuned to rest, so even applause and cheers are not aggressive but rather subdued. The show host even asked the audience several times to applaud louder.
«Ready for battle» spring
At last! Almost everyone who performed that evening had managed to get «ready for battle» with their pieces. There were no delays, panic or fuss, but only well-compiled pieces, ideas, music and singing, incredible sets.
The gala concert was a real hit! All in all, as the members of the jury stressed, the whole festival was impressive this year. Every performance deserved awards. The «Spring» is especially interesting because strong institute teams have developed unexpectedly. The jury even had to take a radical step – apart from the highest award, grand prix, they introduced the second and the third prizes, which had to be shared by several institutes because they were so close to the victory.
The reaction of the audience and the teams themselves was interesting, too. The institutes, which had the highest positions several years in a row and were among leaders during the festival season, turned out not to be ready for the «explosion» of new and unexpectedly strong rivals. They say that «Polytechnic Spring 2017» was the strongest for the Institute of Economics and Management, the Institute of Jurisprudence and Psychology and the Institute of Ecology, Nature Protection and Tourism during the whole time they participated in the festivals.
And the most important thing that delighted everyone is that that «Polytechnic Spring» is growing!

What were the surprises of this year’s festival?

«Overwhelmed with impressions and admiration»
I admire the level of this year’s «Spring», I am Overwhelmed with impressions. You can feel that students are striving for something new, they want to develop. It was interesting to immerse into the atmosphere, to feel it. I know all the details of the preparation for the festival, how many and what efforts students make to show something interesting and coherent. That is why I liked the overall picture very much. We tried to assess the dances as tolerantly as possible. There are not so many professional dancers among students. However, the general level is rather high.

«There has never been such strong festival»
This year’s «Spring» is something I have not seen for along time. Maybe there hasn’t been such festival yet. Most institutes tried to make theatrical performances. I think they took into account the experience of last year’s successful performances, when theatrical performances helped them to have the effect of a show. On the one hand, it is very nice, on the other hand, they were constrained and put within certain limits and monotony. All in all, this festival is special because of the variety of nominations, and this time the jury had to introduce new nominations because there were many candidates for awards. In my opinion, the Institute of Architecture, the Institute of Chemistry and Chemical Technologies, the Institute of Economics and Management and the Institute of Geodesy performed very well. The program of the Institute of Ecology, Nature Protection and Tourism became a revelation. They impressed us with the special effect – the participant of the climbed down from the balcony using climbing gear. The team of the Institute of Architecture also had their superb special effect – Prague bridge in 3D.

«Institutes have grown a lot»
This year’s «Spring» surprised. Many institutes have grown a lot. If last year they performed at an average level, this year some of them even «from scratch» (Institute of Ecology, Nature Protection and Tourism team) showed high quality performance. They prepared them for a long time, a lot of attention was given to the sets. If, for instance, six years ago only Institute of architecture could be proud of their sets, and the rest were happy with what they had found at home, this year all institutes paid a lot of attention to the scenery. And it is cool! It adds atmosphere and spirit, helps to perceive the idea. All in all, there were many interesting director’s approaches. Even complicated topics were given in simple forms. This year there were no failure concerts, as it used to be. Of course, there were weaker and stronger performances. However, after each concert the audience was satisfied. In general, this year’s «Spring» is a storm of emotions.
