The new professional education bachelor’s program «Computer Science (Design and Programming of Intelligent Systems and Devices)» will be launched at the Department of Computer-Aided Design.

Mykhailo Lobur, head of the CAD Department, says that the new professional education program is determined by the needs of the market:

«About 700 students choose Computer Science at Polytechnic every year. The methodological commission of the Institute decided to divide the specialty into three professional education programs. Our program and our Department specialize not only in programming. We cover a large niche of design, in particular, design of 3D devices, mobile and other devices that the country needs today. Therefore, we decided to introduce a new educational program in programming and designing. This made it possible to attract many companies that are interested not only in programming, but also in design. While developing the program, we were joined by experts from the IT cluster of well-known companies not only in Lviv region, but also in Ukraine as well as by well-known companies in Europe».

Such companies as Global Logic and Sombra not only became interested in the new professional education program, but also allocated money for the creation of new educational laboratories.

«Due to extensive international cooperation, we get a lot of different equipment, so students can write bachelor’s and master’s theses, using all this technology to create completely new devices. We have a lot of unique equipment, for example, a 4-channel 1/3-octave spectrum analyzer, atomic force microscopes, thermal cameras, various 3D printers, 3D scanners, virtual reality glasses, etc. We try to provide our students with applied education. If, hypothetically speaking, in five years the market will be saturated with programmers, then our graduates will easily be able to find themselves in another field, even in automation, so students may not be afraid that they will lose their jobs someday, because the knowledge they will acquire is very valuable», – says Mykhailo Melnyk, Deputy Head of the Department of Computer-Aided Design.

After the second year, it will be possible to choose three competitive lines of study. The first is the design of intelligent devices and systems. The second is the programming of intelligent devices and systems. The third is related to the design of intelligent systems of the new generation and microelectromechanical systems.

«In general, if you choose our new professional education program, you will not lose, because engineering, the implementation of informative methods in specific engineering developments will have a bright future», emphasizes Mykhailo Lobur.

According to Nataliia Bokla, Associate Professor at the Department of Computer-Aided Design, who has worked on the development of a new professional education program «Design and Programming of Intelligent Systems and Devices», programming languages are fleeting, so students need to be taught engineering thinking.

«We have worked on this program with specialists from various computer IT firms, who provided various kinds of advice on what is currently important in the market, and what is worth studying in order to apply this knowledge in professional life. We came to the conclusion that not only programming is necessary, but also it is important to apply this knowledge in various applied tasks, learn to design various types of elements and program various tasks. Work in a team is also very important. As experience shows, students often do not know how to do this. We have developed this program to keep pace with new technologies, but its important feature is that we teach our students engineering thinking so that they can design and see what is missing in the creation of various engineering objects. Such skills are very promising», assures Nataliia Bokla.

A surprise for students who will choose a new professional education program will be that there will be a scientific circle for them in the first academic building. Now, a room with the necessary equipment is being prepared for this. Free access will be from 08:00 to 22:00.

«The main credo is that the student, after completing the program, is immediately adapted to life due to broad comprehensive knowledge and practical skills. I must point out that some IT companies act cunningly: they lure our students to them already in the 2nd or 3rd year of study, so they stop studying everything they are taught, becoming narrow-profile specialists. In 5–10 years, the market changes and these workers become unnecessary, and new students from universities are recruited in their place. That is why it is so important to have non-segmented knowledge in order to feel protected from various possible changes in the market», concludes Mykhailo Lobur, Head of the Department of Computer-Aided Design.
