Lviv Polytechnic has joined the unique international project Safe, Sustainable and Swift Reconstruction of Ukraine (S3RoU), aimed at implementing the latest technologies for recycling construction waste, including concrete. The initiative’s goal is to create safe and effective solutions for rebuilding the country after large-scale destruction.
The S3RoU project brings together partners from the UK, Ukraine and the Netherlands, including the Universities of Sheffield, Leeds, Oxford and Imperial College London, as well as Ukrainian institutions, including Lviv Polytechnic National University and the National University of Water and Environmental Engineering. Ukrainian NGO ReThink provides expertise in the field of sustainable development and environmental policy, while Eco+Logic LLC, together with key technology partner Everox (formerly C2CA), and operates specialized equipment for processing construction and demolition waste, supporting the development of concrete recycling technologies essential for Ukraine’s reconstruction. Funded with the support of the UK government, this project is one of the largest in Ukraine focused on the circular economy and sustainable building materials.
― It is extremely important for us that Lviv Polytechnic has joined this international consortium. A team of scientists from our Institute of Construction, Infrastructure and Life Safety, in particular the Department of Roads and Bridges, is carrying out a wide range of laboratory research to determine the properties of new materials using recycled aggregates. Lviv Polytechnic’s cooperation with leading British engineering universities opens up a unique opportunity for us to exchange technologies, knowledge and experience. We aim to show that construction waste can become a valuable resource for the safe and rapid reconstruction of Ukraine, – notes Oleksii Huniak, Associate Professor at the Department of Highways and Bridges, Lviv Polytechnic.
The project is the first in Ukraine to employ specialized equipment for the separation and processing of waste concrete. The technology enables the production of high-quality secondary aggregates and mineral powders suitable for use in concrete mixtures, road construction and cement production.
The key platform for discussing the results and prospects will be the international scientific conference on Safe, Sustainable and Swift Reconstruction of Ukraine, which will be held at Lviv Polytechnic on 19–20 March, 2026.
The event will bring together scientists, experts in the construction industry, educators and public sector representatives to develop collaborative solutions for the sustainable reconstruction of Ukraine. Special attention will be placed on the use of recycled demolition waste.
― For Ukraine, this project is a new level in waste management and infrastructure restoration. It allows not only to effectively rebuild destroyed structures, but also to do it more safely and sustainably, in accordance with the principles of the circular economy, – emphasized Oleksii Huniak.
