In total, the World University Rankings 2026 features 2,191 universities from 115 countries out of 3,118 institutions that provided their data.
The World University Rankings 2026 is led by institutions from the United States and the United Kingdom. The University of Oxford (United Kingdom) holds the first place, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (United States) in second. Princeton University (United States) and the University of Cambridge (United Kingdom) share the third position. Notably, universities from these two countries occupy all positions in the global top 10.
The Times Higher Education World University Rankings is one of the three largest international university rankings, along with the Shanghai ARWU and the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) rankings. The ranking methodology covers 18 criteria in five main areas of assessment:
- Teaching (29,5%, academic reputation and the learning environment);
- Research environment (29%, volume, income and reputation);
- Research quality (30%, citation impact and research influence);
- International outlook (7,5%, the share of international academic staff and international students, international research network);
- Industry (4%, income and patents).
A distinctive feature of the ranking is the significant influence of reputational indicators. Thirty-three percent of the final score (15% for teaching and 18% for research) is determined by how a higher education institution is evaluated by participants in an international survey of scholars and academics.
