German Federal Ministry for the Environment will fund nine climate change adaptation projects in Ukraine. Three of them will be implemented in Lviv region, three in Volyn and three – in Sumy region. This was reported to Zaxid.net by Anatoliy Smaliychuk, national coordinator of competition and projects of Michael-Succow-Foundation (Germany) in Ukraine.

Three projects, that will be funded in Lviv region, will be implemented on the territory of the Roztochia Biosphere Reserve. One of them is the reclamation of land in the dumps of former sulfur quarry in the village of Starychi, Yavoriv district. Stepan Kachan, the winner of the competition, Associate Professor at the Department of Civil Safety, Viacheslav Chornovil Institute of Sustainable Development, Lviv Polytechnic, says:

We want to restore the area around the quarry where sulfur was mined in Soviet times. Now this area is a desert of waste, the wind carries the remnants of chemical compounds around. We want to create a new layer of soil and plant birches and willows on the territory of up to two hectares. In this way we will reduce the negative impact of dry winds on the territory.

All projects are planned to be implemented by the end of spring 2021.
