On 2 May, Lviv Polytechnic National University hosted an important meeting to present the results of the Higher Education Project. This project aims to improve the energy efficiency of higher education institutions in Ukraine and is funded by the European Investment Bank and the Nordic Environment Finance Corporation (NEFCO), and is complemented by grants from the Eastern Europe Energy Efficiency and Environment Partnership (E5P). The initiative aims to comprehensively modernise Ukrainian higher education institutions, transforming them into modern, energy-efficient and resilient institutions.
The participants, including Kristina Mikulova EIB regional hub for Eastern Europe; Andrii Vitrenko, Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine; Artem Ratiev, Head of the Division for Cooperation with the European Investment Bank, Department of International Financial Projects, Ministry of Finance of Ukraine, discussed the importance of the project. Acting Rector Yurii Bobalo and the winner of the election for the post of Rector Nataliia Shakhovska met with the delegation. Volodymyr Kraiovskyi, Vice-Rector for Training and Production, presented the stages of the project in detail.
After a short tour to the main building, the delegation inspected the renovation work on the thermal modernisation of the facade of dormitory No. 3, assessing the scale of the changes made.
The thermal modernisation project at Lviv Polytechnic is funded by a loan from the European Investment Bank in the amount of over €11 million and by a grant from the Eastern Europe Energy Efficiency and Environment Partnership (E5P) in the amount of over €1.2 million.
The project covers the following buildings:
- academic buildings No. 1, No. 2, No. 5;
- Dormitory No. 3.
The total estimated cost of the modernisation of dormitory No. 3 alone is UAH 38,844,545. As of May 2025, the degree of readiness of the facility reached 67%. Active work in the dormitory has been ongoing since October 2024. In the near future, the heating system will be replaced, a modern ventilation system and an individual heating point will be installed, and energy-efficient lighting will be introduced.
The second phase of the project, which involves the overhaul of academic buildings, will be implemented in 2025–2026. Tender procedures for these works are scheduled to begin in May 2025.
This project is an example of how European support provides Ukrainian universities with new opportunities for development. Together we are creating more comfortable, safe and energy-efficient spaces for students to study and live. The energy-efficient transformation of education is not only about reducing energy consumption, but also about caring for the people who shape the country’s future.
