The Department of Higher Geodesy and Astronomy (HGA), the Institute of Geodesy, Lviv Polytechnic, has developed new bachelor’s degree programmes – Geo-Consulting and Earth Monitoring and Geo-Analytics.
Demanded everywhere
Bohdan Dzhuman, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Head of the HGA Department, explained to the Polytechnic Centre for Communication:
– Our previous programmes within the specialities of Earth Sciences and Geodesy and Land Management no longer met global challenges, trends in science and technology and labour market requirements. Therefore, we decided to update them. We involved teachers, students and employers in this process, as we value the opinions of all stakeholders.
We started with the Geo-Consulting and Earth Monitoring programme for bachelors. Its goal is to respond to the needs of modern society and promote the development of the innovative potential of natural sciences.
To achieve this, it is necessary to train a specialist who can optimally combine methods of ground and space monitoring of the Earth based on modern information technologies, as well as provide relevant advisory services to solve complex problems of environmental assessment and geohazards, promote security, rational use of natural resources and sustainable development of Ukraine.
– So, is the demand for graduates who choose this speciality inevitable?
– Specialists in Earth monitoring are in demand in almost all sectors of the national economy. They will be able to work and provide consulting services in the agricultural sector and forestry, oil and gas sector, subsoil management, environmental issues, emergency response, military, water management, transport, communications and telecommunications, municipal services, etc., as well as solve complex specialised tasks in the field of engineering, geophysics, geology and geodesy and provide technical consulting services in these areas.
