Recently, Lviv Polytechnic National University successfully hosted the Data Privacy in IoT Summer School, organised within the framework of the DataProEU project, the Erasmus+ programme, the Jean Monnet Chair. The event brought together undergraduate and graduate students, professors and experts in the field of IoT and cybersecurity interested in modern aspects of personal data protection in the digital age.

The School was opened by Anastasiia Doroshenko, project coordinator, Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor at the Department of Automated Control Systems, the Institute of Computer Science and Information Technologies, who spoke about the project’s goals and objectives. In her opening remarks, she outlined the key areas of DataProEU and stressed the importance of combining technical and legal knowledge to effectively ensure privacy in the Internet of Things. In her lecture on European experience of personal data protection in IoT systems, she revealed the basic principles of privacy in the EU, focusing on the challenges posed by smart devices.

Over the course of five days, participants had the opportunity to join a series of lectures, practical workshops and interactive discussions, in particular they

  • got acquainted with European approaches to data protection in IoT systems;
  • participated in workshops on applying the GDPR to smart devices, assessing the impact on personal data protection of the DPIA in IoT systems, and modelling attacks on IoT;
  • worked on their own projects in the field of secure IoT.

The summer school featured presentations by experts in the field of IoT and personal data protection.

The event covered both technical aspects (encryption, built-in security, GPS spoofing, ESP8266) and regulatory challenges (GDPR, Ukrainian law on personal data protection, anonymisation mechanisms, etc.) A series of interesting workshops were held, including:

  • Data Protection in IoT: Key Challenges, where participants discussed practical scenarios of vulnerabilities in smart devices;
  • DPIA in relation to GDPR for smart technologies, which was dedicated to Data Protection Impact Assessment for IoT;
  • Problems and Challenges of Personal Data Protection in IoT, where participants discussed local security challenges;
  • practical workshop Smart Home Organisation: Practical Tips, which combined IoT technologies with household scenarios.

The Summer School included both offline events and an online day that ensured the involvement of a wider audience. The school ended with the presentation of individual projects by the participants, a lively discussion and exchange of ideas on the future development of privacy protection in smart systems.

The organisers are grateful to all the participants, lecturers and partners of the School for their active participation, interest and high professional level.
