The Department of Artificial Intelligence Systems, the Institute of Computer Science and Information Technologies, Lviv Polytechnic National University, for a long time has been developing a partnership with the largest AI community in Ukraine, AI HOUSE.
This cooperation opens up new opportunities for students, faculty and researchers in the field of artificial intelligence, Data Science and machine learning.
– For us, this cooperation is a strategic step in shaping a modern learning environment. We want our students to study technologies and create them. Together with AI HOUSE, we integrate the best practices of the industry into the educational process, providing students with real opportunities for development in the field of AI, – emphasized Nataliia Melnykova, Head of the Department of Artificial Intelligence Systems.
The first major outcome of the partnership was the Data Science Summer School 2025. Over five intensive days, participants engaged in hands-on practice in data analysis, machine learning, and data visualization, met with industry professionals, and received expert feedback. The curriculum covered data structures, the GIL, and data processing with Pandas. Participants learned supervised learning algorithms, metrics, and approaches to problem formulation; and explored unsupervised methods, data visualization techniques, and data structuring. Special attention was given to principles of effective visualization, comparisons of Matplotlib, Seaborn, and Plotly, as well as the analysis of spatial data and the development of analytical dashboards.
Another important event within the framework of the collaboration was the AI in Science: Principles, Practice & Possibilities lecture series, aimed at researchers working at the intersection of science, engineering, and artificial intelligence.
Jack Griffiths (University of Sheffield), an AI HOUSE expert and a researcher working at the intersection of artificial intelligence and physics, presented examples of applying machine learning to quantum physics problems and to generative modeling of complex physical processes. The event also featured discussions on the use of AI and ML in physical research; models for embedded systems (including biomedical sensors, autonomous navigation, and edge-AI); and the fundamentals and future of neuromorphic computing. Participants gained valuable insights from British scientific projects, explored edge architectures and neuromorphic computing approaches, and had the opportunity to engage directly with the speaker through questions.
The Department of AIS also initiated a panel discussion entitled «University and AI: Challenge, Opportunity, or Necessity?» The panel featured Taras Kytsmey, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Lviv Polytechnic and co-founder of SoftServe; Nataliia Shakhovska, Rector of Lviv Polytechnic (at that time, Director of the Institute of Computer Science and Information Technologies); Oleksii Molchanovskyi, Head of the UCU Innovation Office and member of the AI HOUSE Board; and Oleksandr Kosovan, scientist, AI HOUSE expert, and lecturer at UCU.
The conversation focused on whether AI could replace teachers and researchers in the near future. The panelists also examined issues of academic integrity in the era of AI – its potential as both a support tool and a possible threat – and discussed which skills universities should cultivate to ensure students remain competitive.
