Division of Chemical Technology in the system of Lviv Technical Academy was organized in 1861 and united all the chemical specialties — the technology of organic synthesis, technology of inorganic substances, technology of fermentation substances, oil and gas technology.
In 1923, two departments on the basis of division were organized, in particular, Department of Chemical Technology of Organic Substances (CTOS), headed by professor V. Lisnyanskiy, an outstanding scientist in the field of intermediate products and organic dyes.
In 1945, the leadership of CTOS department was received by professor I.V. Grinberg, and the department was renamed to Department of Technology of Organic Synthesis (TOS). Since 1951 the head of the department was appointed by associate professor B.G. Boldyrev, a recognized expert in the field of organic sulfur compounds. In 1964, the Department of OST was renamed to Department of Technology of Biologically Active Compounds, Intermediates and Dyes (TBCID).
Since 1976, associate professor V.T. Kolesnikov became the head of TBCID, a well-known scientist in the field of quinoid compounds. In 1981, professor L.S. Chuiko became , a specialist in biologically active polymers and rubber. In 1988, professor V.T. Kolesnikov, after defending of a doctoral dissertation, became the head of the department again .
Since 1994, the department of the TBSPB is headed by professor Volodymyr Novikov, who works in the field of the organic synthesis of biologically active compounds, biochemistry, technology of medicinal compounds and biotechnology. During the period of existence of the department a number of specialties were created, namely, the technology of organic dyes and intermediate products (TD, TOS, TBPP), technology of medicinal substances (TMS), technology of plastic mass (TPM), technology of biologically active compounds (TBS), biotechnology (BT), industrial pharmacy (IP), chemical technology of pharmaceutical products (CTPP, TPP), pharmacy (PR). Since 2001, the TBSPB Department has been working in the fields of “Biotechnology” in the direction of “Chemical Technology and Engineering” and “Technology of Pharmaceuticals” in the of “Pharmacy” (bachelor, engineering and master’s level of stationary and correspondence forms of training).
Since 2003 the department has been working on the basic direction of “Biotechnology” and specialty “Biotechnology of biologically active substances”. Since 1945, the staff number of teachers has been grown from 3 people up to 27 people, including 2 professors, 14 associate professors, 11 assistants. The department created a new technical potential of laboratories for training and mastered a broad base for conducting students practice. During the formation of the department until 1945, 180 specialists in chemistry-technologists were graduated, 2,047 engineers of chemical engineers were trained from 1945 to 2000, among them 843 engineers of dye technology, 770 engineers of technology of biologically active compounds, as well as 316 biotechnologists and 56 technologists of pharmaceuticals. Graduates of department TBSPB are well-known on chemical plants, many of them are heads and chief engineers of enterprises, leading specialists of scientific research institutes of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, teachers of higher educational institutions.
Educational programs and levels of higher education of the Educational Professional Preparation of the Bachelor and the II level of higher education of the Educational Professional Preparation of the Master (Engineering) and Educational Scientific Preparation of the Master (Sciences) for specialties 162 — “Biotechnologies and Bioengineering” and 226 “Pharmacy, Industrial Pharmacy” were developed.
Within the framework of international cooperation, double diploma in specialty 162 — “Biotechnology and Bioengineering” can be obtained.
Among the graduates of the department there are 3 academicians, 15 doctors of sciences, 92 candidates of sciences, 2 doctoral and 39 candidate dissertations were defended on the department.

Kolesnikov (from 1988 to 1994). Since 1994, the head of the department is Doctor of chemical sciences, prof. V.P. Novikov.
