Research Areas

Researches at the department is conducted in the field of: Architectural heritage and its preservation. Restoration and reconstruction of buildings: the methodology of pre-restoration research, theory and practice of restoration, reconstruction, revaluationof architectural complexes, history of architecture development and urban complexes.

The main research area is scientific analysis relating to the architectural monuments and ensembles restoration theory and practice, revaluation and regeneration of urban development systems, history of architecture and complexes of urban development in Western Ukraine.

Research and education atthe department are conducted in cooperation with foreign partners of the restoration field from Poland, Austria, Germany, the U. S. and other countries.

Annually, international student conferences concerning restoration problems of architectural monuments and also problematic conferences and workshops on how to improve architectural and art monuments restoration theory and practice are held at the department. One of the achievements of the department is organization of international conferences “Lviv City: preservation and development” (22 May 2008), the Ukrainian — Swedish workshop "Scientific methods of research, preservation and regeneration of historic cities "(20 — 21 November 2006), exhibition and roundtable "ArchitecturaMilitaris“(research problems, preservation and restoration of Ukrainian defensive architecture monuments May — June 2004) and others.

The faculty supervise student’s research and design projects, do their own projects. For example, a long-term research “Patriarch Joseph Blind museum and memorial complex project in the village of Zazdrist, Ternopil region”, for which the Department was awarded first degree diploma of the State Construction Committee, Architecture and Housing Policy of Ukraine in 2000. Development proposals concerning one of the most important project about architectural conservation of the Western Ukrainian 12-13 centuries heritage-listed building(Assumption Cathedral situated in village Krylos near Galych) were designed.

Years of research in historical part of Zhovkva, conducted by the department, resulted in creation of construction documents, core historical and architectural city projects: “Master Plan of the preserved are a development” “Re-constructional project of historical part of Zhovkva”.

Based on construction project drawings and specifications conducted by professionals cultural preservedareas were created in Belz, Lviv region(2000)and Berezhany, Ternopil region (2001). Similar documentation is ready about Buchach and Pidgaitsi, Ternopil region). One of the strongest departments contributions was initiation and organization of events that lead to Lviv including to the UNESCO World Heritage List (workwas completedin 1998). Nowadays the department works to enregister wooden churches of the Carpathian region into the UNESCO list.

Main research areas are:

  • Regeneration of architectural complexes, historical places and cities (historical and architectural reserves, historical and urban feasibilities, project inventory
  • Documentation and certification of buildings, historical and architectural key plans, defining the borders of cities historical areas, the development of exclusive zones, the development of master plans for reservations, etc.)
  • Restoration and conservation of listed building, archaeological samples and works of art;
  • Research on the history of architecture and Ukraine western region settlements; different monuments researches.
