Magic Architecture is the title of a book manuscript by the Czernowitz born architect and theorist Frederick Kiesler, which had been submitted to publishers after World War II but ultimately, never published.
Structured as an essay in ten pages of text and a set of composite plate illustrations, drawings and diagrams, this represents Kiesler’s most extensive book project. It reflects the interdisciplinary research of the architect and his wife Stefi Kiesler in the fields of paleo-archeology, natural and cultural anthropology, human psychology, animal physiology, art and architectural history. According to Kiesler, Magic Architecture is ultimately an Everyman’s Architecture, an architecture that may address the urgent problems of human existence following a period of global devastation.
In tandem with this exhibition, a lecture by Gerd Zillner, Director, the Austrian Frederick and Lillian Kiesler Private Foundation in Vienna will be held at 17:00 on Friday, June 20th, in the Machine Hall of Lviv Polytechnic National University.
This exhibition of facsimile work by Frederick Kiesler is made possible with the cooperation of the Frederick Kiesler Foundation in Vienna and with CIVA (Center for Information, Documentation, and Exhibitions) in Brussels. This selection of Frederick Kiesler work was made by CIVA Director Nikolaus Hirsch and was part of a larger exhibition entitled Pre-Architectures (6 November, 2024 – 30 March, 2025). Pre-Architectures that addressed not simply “not architecture, rather what architecture could have become but ultimately disavowed. The same unfulfilled potentialities haunt not only the distant past but also architecture’s anxious present in a time of environmental crisis, energetic transformation and related social challenges.” The exhibition of Kiesler’s work is also held in parallel with a forthcoming MIT Press publication Magic Architecture: The Story of Human Housing by Frederick Kiesler and edited by Spyros Papapetros and Gerd Zillner (in August 2025).
