History of the Department of Electronic Computer Machines

Department of Electronic Computer Machines (ECM) was established in 1963 and is the first department of computer orientation in Western Ukraine. It was and still is the basic in computere equipment and technology in the region.

From November 1, 2001, when a structure of the Lviv Polytechnic National University was changed, the Department of Electronic Computer Machines joined to the Institute of Computer Technology, Automation and Metrology.

A significant role in the creation of the Department played an academician of the Ukrainian SSR and the USSR Academy of Sciences Kharkevych Olexander (1904 — 1965) and a correspondent member of the Ukrainian SSR and the USSR Academy of Sciences Karandeev Konstantin (1907-1969).

Since its founding in 1984 the Sc. D. and Prof. Scvetskyi Bentsion (1916-1991) had been the head of the Department. He is the prizewinner of the State Prize of Ukraine.

Since 1984 the head of the Department had been the academy of engineering sciences of ukraine Academician and Prof. Vyshenchuk Igor (1931 —1993 ), who is the twice prizewinner of the State Prize of Ukraine. In 1993-1994 the head of the Department was the a Professor and Ph. D. Viter Yuri.

Since 1994 the head of the Department of Electronic Computer Machines has been the Sc. D. and PMelnyk Anatolii, who is the Academy of Engineering Sciences of Ukraine and the International Academy of Computer Science and Systems academician, member of international professional organizations IEE, IEEE, ACM.

Since the first graduation of Ukrainianengineers in December 1964 and first graduation of engineers for abroad in 1966 the Department has prepared more than 5,000 engineers, about 700 of which for foreign countries.

The first digital computer at the Department of Electronic Computer Machines was “Minsk-1”, compiling and debugging of which began on December 6, 1962. Until 1968 it was the only major digital computer at the Lviv Polytechnic Institute. In 1968 the Department was equipped with the “Razdan-2” machine and since 1970 there were machines “Promin”, “Nairi” and “Mir”. Until the appearance in 1987 of personal computers and the creation of computer networks there were further used computers M-222 of series ES ECM and SM ECM.
